To all those who didn't get the chance to go to the Hole in the Wall exhibit, we thought we should catch up with Fintan Magee to see what he's been up to, Magee has been producing great work for quite sometime now, one of Fintant's projects can be seen opposite Cooparoo station on the Cleveland line. Who are you and when did you get started?

Mr Magee, full time artist, I started as a small child but only got stupid with it in my

teens.

What do you think will happen if there are 2012 floods?
My riverside mansion is going the f@#k under.

Who inspires you?

To many artists to count, but since you asked I will indulge in some shameless name

dropping, I look a lot at work at the guys that are doing more mural based street work

like, Gaia, ROA, Jaz, Shida, Gimiks born, Best Ever, the list goes on…also my pops

Has anyone got beef with you?

Only the A&R that plays the electric guitar.

Has your work got any hidden messages?

Hidden messages? Yeah but I prefer if people can take there own meanings away

from my work. I guess I like making art that can make people curious and get people

thinking a little, why spoil it by writing a two-paragraph artist statement explaining

everything I do.

Street art or graffiti?

The only difference between the two is an @$$holes opinion.

Have you had any injuries from painting?

Nothing to horrific, I have twisted my ankle a couple of times jumping fences or

whatever. I have also cut my hands on barbwire on a bunch of occasions for the same

reason.

Have you ran into any trouble with the boys in blue?

My last arrest was in Belgium a few years back for my usual disorderly behaviour. I

spent a couple of nights in a holding cell with two gypsies that were being deported, it

sucked but at least the food was decent. These days I am getting pretty tame in my old

age. Jail isn’t my thing really.

Any last words?

Back to the future was a great trilogy, the matrix wasn’t.

A train service was terminated in Sydney after a giant purple penis was spray painted on the driver's window.

RailCorp told ninemsn the 2.49pm train from Martin Place to Dapto was cancelled at Sydenham Station on December 7 after the graffiti was found on windscreen of the back driver's cabin.

"It was not only offensive, but would have been a safety hazard when the train operated back from Dapto as it would have blocked the driver’s view," RailCorp said in a statement.

Passengers had to wait 29 minutes for a replacement train to continue the route from Sydenham Station.

The vandalised train was sent to the depot for cleaning.

A photo of the train was posted by a passenger on social news website Reddit.com who said: "This graffiti just caused my train to terminate … Literally c--- blocked."

RailCorp said the incident showed how graffiti can impact customers.

"Not only is there a cost to the taxpayer in clean up; but the service was terminated and customers experienced delays of 29 minutes as a result."

The company said people caught vandalising rail property faced fines up to $2200.

Who are you? And when did you start?
Bhats, I started tagging in high school with my surf gang. I met some writers by chance and somehow I fit in. After a while I wanted to paint things besides letters

Do your characters represent anything?
They don't represent any specific person or idea and it changes from peice to peice. It is ambiguous.

Do you prefer letters or characters?
Both. Depends on the spot, how much paint I have and how I'm feeling. I don't care for "graffiti vs street art". It is the same for me.

What are your plans for the new year?
Travelling, painting

Been chased lately?
Not chased in a while just verbally discouraged.

How does society approach your work?
I don't think about that too much. Some people are into it, some people like it because it's on a wall, some people hate it because it's on a wall, some people hate everything, some people hate it because it's not letters. I guess most people just wouldn't notice.

If you cruise around Brisbane or the Gold coast you are bound to see some great art work, one artist stands out from the crowd, Shida. Enormous works painted with rollers and bucket paint, detailed line work and stickers that flood the streets.

Seeing Shida's work so often we thought it was best to get inside the head of this prodigy.

Who are you? And when did your adventure as

a street artist begin?

Started at age 14 on the Gold Coast after a family trip to Europe. Shortly after I started coming up to Brisbane most weekends to put up stickers where I met guys like Guz, I'm Seein' Robots and 1337.

Who/What are your major influences for you artwork?

I'm driven by graffiti and the streets. My styles grown from the influence of artists like Lister, Phibs, Sync and Reka. However these days I am mostly looking into my own work and drawing from the modern masters and Fantasy art from the likes of Rodger Dean and Frank Frazetta.

What has been the most memorable mission for you so far?

Vienna 09 painting on the canals. It was a dream. Painting in the middle of the day boom boxs, party times. People would bring us free beer all types of shit. Bit of a summer of love.

What is your preferred medium?

On canvas its aerosol and mix media. On the street I'm really trying to work more with extension poles and large scale.

How did you develop your style?

It came at first from painting with continuous lines. As my pieces grew larger it evolved and I started to use my arm as a natural compass. Its just a constant progression.

Most customers know that Butter Beats has the Kingz Cans range. We recently brought out Ques Black Plague! So on that note, we decided it was best for all to get to know QUES a little better. There was no better way than to show off some of his work and get an interview.

Who are you?

I write QUES tfh.id.bamc

And when did your adventure as a graffiti writer begin?

I did my first piece in november 2001, shorty after that graffiti consumed my life...

Who/What are your major influences for you artwork?

Some of my favourite writers are Saber, Craola, Totem2 , Shok1 etc...

but i find influences in everything from fine art to blackmetal logos to tattoos and naturally occurring textures and anomalies.

What has been the most memorable mission for you so far?

Too many days and nights spent planning and executing missions they all sort of blur into one haha, but gettin around LA with my fam over there is always great.

What is your preferred medium?

aerosol, Kingz Cans to be precise.

How did you develop your style?

I'm not sure, besides always being drawn towards the darker side of things, simple color schemes and nasty letters are what i like to see.

I want my pieces to look like a plague about to infect its surroundings.

Who are you? And when did your adventure as a street artist begin?

I am an Australian artist currently based in Perth. I started doing
street work around then beginning of 2005

Who/What are your major influences for you artwork?

I’m interested in folk art,large scale art, story telling, pattern
making and old machines.

What has been the most memorable mission for you so far?

Probably painting a rooftop about 20 stories up over looking Manhattan
earlier this year. The view was ridiculous.

What is your preferred medium?

I like to switch it up – aerosol and roller paint are very effective
outside, tiny brushes inside.

The state government has denied that WA prisons are unsafe after a serial graffiti vandal escaped an immediate jail term after a Perth Magistrate found that the 20-year-old would become "sport" for rapists and murderers.

During a week in which Sean Robert Taylor had a 12-month jail sentence suspended for 18 months because of a judge's concern about his safety in jail, Minister for Corrective Service Terry Redman said serious assaults, including rapes, in WA prisons had significantly dropped in the past three years.

But those sentiments appear not to have been shared by Magistrate Stephen Malley when he reportedly suspended Taylor's sentence for 124 counts of criminal damage because of concerns that he would be targeted in jail that was "full of rapists and murderers."

"I'm afraid you are to be sport with no one to look after you," the West Australian reported Magistrate Malley as telling Taylor.

Taylor was ordered to pay $23,750 and do 100 hours community service for separate charges.

University of WA Crime Research Centre's clinical psychologist David Indermaur said it would not be the first time the issue over prison safety was raised in court.

He said while there was much debate on whether these crimes were being committed in jail, his own experience from working in men's prisons during the 1970s and '80s was that it did occur.

"It has been something known to go on since prisons first came on the scene here in Western Australia," Associate Professor Indermaur said.

He said he used to counsel a number of young men who were raped but he believed they only represented a fraction of those affected since it was considered a crime of "deep shame" for men.

He said despite the efforts to sometimes separate the more vulnerable, it did not always prevent it.

Making our prisons safer

A 2009 report, Predator or Prey? by Dr Brian Steels and Dr Dot Goulding of Murdoch University's Centre for Social and Community Research, found that out of 150 male prisoners they spoke to, 116 of them had knowledge of a sexual assault and experienced some pressure to perform a sexual act.

Those who admitted to being raped in prison accounted for 21 out of the 150, the majority of which said the act occurred within the first part of their sentence.

"Thirteen of these men [all aged 25 years or younger] were serving a sentence of 24 months or less, and all had been sexually assaulted within the first nine months of their sentence," the report said.

"Two were on remand [without sentence] at the time of their assaults."

It said that two of the 13 men had been under protective custody when they were raped.

"[Of the 21,] four spoke of being coerced into a relationship that provided them with either a sanctuary away from other predators or a degree of support," the report said.

"In three cases it was reported by the victim that the perpetrator sought them out and encouraged them to consider becoming possible cellmates, situations that deteriorated into sexual abuse within days.

"Only eight of these sexual assaults were officially reported to the prison authorities."

The report found that of the 35 men who had come under pressure to provide unwanted sexual acts, including masturbation and oral sex, was "largely ignored by prison staff".

"Several men among this group spoke about being groomed for sexual favours," the report said. "They mentioned feeling uncomfortable or even trapped in particular situations."

A further six men acknowledged their own predatory behaviour and of those, four said they had been previously assaulted in prison themselves.

Report author Dr Steels said while prisoners did not deserve sympathy they did deserve "justice and fairness".

The report was commissioned by the Uniting Church in WA and the church's Reverend Ron Larkin said the core of state government policy should focus on building communities rather than more prisons.

"Prisons are full of people whose circumstances have led them to make bad decisions and bad choices," he said.

"People with mental illness, drug addiction, low levels of education and unsettled childhoods are over-represented in WA prisons.

"Many people who, before becoming offenders, were also victims of crime themselves.

"Those in prison should not be further victimised. Our report made recommendations about making prisons safer.

"To date we don't have any indication that the recommendations from the report have been implemented."

Yet Mr Redman said that the number of serious assaults, including rapes, had reduced since the Liberal Party came to government.

"Most people would be concerned about the comments that have been reported today. However it is not for me to comment or pass judgement on the Magistrate's decision," Mr Redman said.

"It is my role, however, to ensure that our prisons are as safe and secure as possible.

"On that front, we have almost halved the rate of prisoner-on-prisoner serious assaults and we currently have far more officers patrolling the prisons.

"Prison is not to be a fun place; but it is to be a safe place. And it would be wrong for anyone to have a view that our prisons are somehow not safe; or that the environment somehow mirrors that seen on television shows out of America."

Statistics provided by the Department of Corrective Services showed the number of serious assaults between prisoners, which included rapes, had dropped from 25 in 2007/08 to 16 this year.

The number of prison officers had also increased by 356 since 2007/08, up to 1825 total this year.

The government was also planning to convert Rangeview Remand Centre from a juvenile detention centre into a prison for 18 to 25 year olds, while Banksia Hill Detention Centre will be expanded to become the main juvenile centre.

Appropriate punishment for graffiti vandals

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of RE/MAX WA says the government should consider a different approach to graffiti vandals.

The real estate group's Geoff Baldwin said there had been a clear resurgence in graffiti vandalism throughout many suburbs in recent months, representing a major threat to current property values.

It was fairly obvious that the current response to graffiti vandals was not working and the first step in attacking the problem was to take time to understand what was important to these vandals, Mr Baldwin said.

"Graffiti vandals seem to be driven on by each other in a quest to 'tag' as many spaces as possible in a particular area and this is compounded where no attempt is made to remove the graffiti quickly," he said.

"As soon as one tag appears it is only matter of days before three or four more accompany it and this scourge then quickly expands to other walls and fences in an area.

"Currently the courts are hog-tied by the politically correct minority who defend the vandal's rights while ignoring the rights of the community, so it's time to look for alternatives.

"With this in mind, one of the most important days for any young person is when they are old enough to qualify for a driver's license so an affective and appropriate punishment would be to delay that date based on a demerit system, for any offence including graffiti.

"Currently the courts are finding it harder to allocate appropriate punishment to graffiti offenders, however if these young people knew they would either have to wait another year before they could qualify to drive a car or if they are already licensed, lose that license for a year perhaps they would think twice about pushing the button on that spray can.

"If we are going to stop this problem we need to, as a community, look well outside the box and hit these vandals where it will have the most effect."

The Attorney General Christian Porter would not comment about the case, however Premier Colin Barnett said that many in the community would be dismayed with the outcome.

Krafty Kuts (real name Martin Reeves) is an English electronic music, dance music and breakbeat producer and DJ . His Debut album - Freakshow was released in 2006 on his Against The Grain label and contains guest artists Tim Deluxe and Ashley Slater from the UK band Freak Power. He had previously released Tricka Technology with fellow producer and DJ A Skillz. He started his own record label - Against the Grain.

Krafty Kuts has won "best DJ" three years in a row as well as being honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Breakbeat award at the Breakspoll Awards.

We have had a massive influx of UK vinyl over the last few months and especially from pioneering label Kold Sweat here is a little something we found out on the Label :

Kold Sweat was founded in West London in 1990. After the successes of the pioneering UK label Music of Life, Many artists jumped straight from Music of Life to Kold Sweat. Several artists who transitioned from Music of Life to Kold Sweat Records were Son of Noise, St. Troopers, Katch 22, and Standing Ovation, and along with other new and different artists, such as Krispy 3, Unanimous Decision, F9's, Dynametrix and offered a new identity to UK Hip Hop's growing fanbase.(These artists saw what was happening in the UK; Hip Hop was beginning to take its place in the music industry. Once UK hip hop scene started to emerge in the early 90s, Kold Sweat managed to bridge a gap by allowing an easy and credible transition of new artists to looked for new directions lyrically and new sounds to sample. Under the guidance of accomplished songwriter, record producer, and engineer Angelo Starr, Kold Sweat managed to contribute to British Black music and hip hop history. For an independent record label, their diverse acts, distinctive green record covers, healthy amount of air play and increasing record sales the label grew strongly in early 90s.

Unfortunately,as the late 90s started to approach, American hip hop was starting to flourish more than ever. As American hip hop labels were releasing new artists by the minute; such as, the infamous Notorious B.I.G, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Tupac, Kold Sweat record label took a turn for the worse. Kold Sweat artists like the F9's and Point Black simply could not compete with the quantity and quality coming out of the U.S. The F9's legendary album, "Are a hip hop Band" went down as one of the worst British Hip Hop albums ever released. Kold Sweat's somewhat limited success did not last, and Kold Sweat ceased trading in the mid-1990s, leaving their artists homeless.

We destroyed all copies we had left and this is now the most collectable piece of Oz Hip Hop history to come out of Queensland. Just look at the line up... a whos who of Qld Hip Hop!! Tue 2 Aug 2010. Butter Beats Record Store, Brisbane, Australia.

I headed up to Brisbane to attend a vintage BMX show and had to catch up with some old school friends that I hadn't seen for 20+ years! So i had no choice but to leave a mark again and paint a few pieces for the few days i had spare.

I caught up with a long lost old school friend Kasino who has a few cool lifestyle stores in Brisbane but the Valley store was the place we ended up painting in the back car park. It was perfect timing to do this piece as construction was in process to make way for the area to be used as a Sunday artists market and our piece added as a cool backdrop for the new set up.

The piece has a traditional graf sticker style piece (my specialty) and Kasino painted the well known Story Bridge and river with a night skyline of a few buildings. A classic b-boy style character was added on one side and seeing i was attending a BMX show Kasino wanted to include the B-boy riding a BMX. Cool!

I also caught up with an old school Melbourne friend who I originally went to Brisbane with for the first time back in 87 and we ended up piecing a few places around town. I promised him that when i come up again, I’ll get busy and bust out a Paris classic piece on canvas for him. All I can say is that the weather up north is real good, warm and sunny and we're still in winter! It was great to paint in the back yard along with clear blue skies! My mate was loving every minute to see some spray can action happen after all the years and since then he’s been talking to draw again so I think a little corruption has evolved! …all in the name of fun i say.

A Tragedy for Adelaide

A YOUNG teenage boy attempting to graffiti a Southern Expressway bridge in Adelaide's south-west has fallen to his death early this morning.

It is understood the youth slipped from a narrow ledge on the side of the bridge, falling on rocks in Christies Creek below.

The body was discovered by a pedestrian walking along the Morphett Vale creek about 8am (CST).

Police say a backpack containing spray cans was recovered from the scene.

Inspector Stephen Howard appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"It's not just about the graffiti, it's about public safety," he said. "These bridges are not built for people to climb on."

"It's a tragedy for him and his family."
